The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that from October to December 2021, their Smuggling Interdiction and Trade Compliance (SITC) program seized and destroyed over 1,900 pounds of prohibited animal products from New York City-area retailers. This product came from China, an area heavily impacted by foreign animal disease (FAD), specifically African swine fever.

Protecting the U.S. swine herd from FADs is a joint effort between producers and state and federal agencies, including Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
