Compared to the previous 'Hogs and Pigs' report in March, there were two per cent more hogs and pigs in total on 1 June at 66.6 million head, and market hogs were also up by two per cent at 60.8 million.

There were one per cent more breeding pigs (5.88 million) but fewer farrowings for the quarter than in the same period of 2012, which was exceptionally high.

Although the inventory has a seasonal pattern, there has been a clear upward trend over recent years, and the same can be noted for the number of pigs saved per litter, which has reached a new record of 10.31.

Iowa continues to lead the league table of pig-producing states by a wide margin, followed by North Carolina and Minnesota.
