According to 47 News, PED has been confirmed in 70 pigs in the Tahara region of Aichi prefecture in the south of Honshu island.

The same source reports figures from the Ministry of Agriculture that between the first outbreak in October 2013 and the end of August 2014, PED has led to the deaths of 37 million pigs on 817 farms in 38 prefectures of Japan.

Further north, in Azumino in Nagano prefecture, 75 pigs have been confirmed with PED in the second outbreak of the disease recently. The previous outbreak was in May with no signs of the disease in the meantime, according to Shinmai.

To the east, in the region of Chiba, a festival to promote pork consumption started last week, according to Yomiuri Online.

Nine hotels and restaurants in the area will feature special dishes made from locally produced pork throughout the month.

The peak PED occurrence in Chiba prefecture was in May and June this year, and losses are estimated to exceed ¥1 billion (more than US$9 million), according to the prefecture's livestock association.
