UK - The use of PCV2 vaccines has resulted in big improvements in productivity on many farms.
However, on some units this has caused complications, says Paul Thompson, veterinary consultant to pig-breeding company, ACMC Ltd. Since fewer pigs are dying, there are more to finish and extra numbers to find space for.
It is essential, he says, to ensure that the benefits of PCV2 vaccinations are not neutralised by the negative effects of overstocking. All farms should review continually stocking densities and some units may need to reassess sow numbers or look for additional grow-out space.
