The global swine industry increasingly relies on vaccination, according to Boehringer Ingelheim. With a total market value of €525 million in 2008, vaccines have become the most important health management tool for modern pig production (Vetnosis Ltd, March 2009).

The driver of this growth are vaccines against Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2), which have quickly become a standard vaccination in all major markets, alongside Mycoplasma vaccination programmes. The size of the PCV2-vaccine market is close to €180 million.

With total sales of ”€90 million, Boehringer's Ingelvac CircoFLEX was the global market leader in this segment last year (Animal Pharm, April 2009 and Boehringer Ingelheim).
