Helen Clarke took up the role on 14 September and will draw on her academic and practical experience to assist individual pig businesses.

She joins the team directly from a hands-on role on a commercial indoor unit at Southam, Warwickshire. Prior to that, Ms Clarke worked on the Pig Development Centre's farm at the University of Leeds while completing a masters research project on the behaviour of different pig genotypes. Her time there also included a spell as a research technician.

Ms Clarke is excited about contributing to the knowledge transfer team's activity.

She said: "I'm looking forward to working with pig producers to improve herd productivity, while also broadening my own experience.

"Sharing knowledge and best practice advice will help provide practical solutions to challenges on pig units."

Ms Clarke's role during her tenure will include spending time on farm and running producer workshops as BPEX enters the busy autumn period; her focus will be on getting producers together to continue the KT northern region work.

Mike Varley, BPEX Head of KT R&D said: "Helen is a welcome addition to the KT team. She will be working closely with our other KT managers over the next few months to deliver producer benefits in the North-East."
