Weekly Overview: Infrared Cameras Used to Measure Sow Temperature Can Lower Piglet Mortality

ANALYSIS - New research from Aarhus University, Denmark, has now refined a method that uses infrared cameras to remotely and more accurately measure the sow’s body temperature.

Knowing whether or not a sow has a high temperature is important to detect if she is becoming ill, especially if she has just given birth.

The new development should help with the early detection of fever in sows and therefore can reduce piglet mortality and the consumption of antibiotics.

In disease news, the US-based Swine Health Information Center reports a dramatic decline in the number of cases of Seneca Valley Virus.

And, across Europe, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania have all reported more outbreaks of African Swine Fever in wild boar.
