The first of the two was reported on 15 January at a farrow to partial finish farm in Bruce and the second at a pig finisher unit in Huron on 21 January.

No other details on the outbreaks have been released.

North America is also under threat from Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS). A professor and scientist from the University of Minnesota spoke to ThePigSite at the North American PRRS Symposium, explaining that emerging strains of PRRS can be highly virulent.

Every few years a particularly virulent strain of PRRS will arise and cause waves of disease.

"We do not know exactly how these happen, but the genetic changes have to involve mutation and recombination, and the consequences are bad," said Michael Murtaugh.

In South Korea, a further 10,172 pigs have been destroyed due to another outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Jeollabuk-Do.

African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks have slowed down slightly this week with outbreaks reported only in wild boars in Latvia, Russia, Lithuania and Poland.

In other disease news, classical swine fever broke out this week in Mongolia. In total, 272 cases were reported in farmed pigs and all 419 pigs on the three farms were destroyed as a result of the outbreak.

Another case of LA-MRSA has also been confirmed in four pig herds on a farm in Nord-Trøndelag, Norway.

Bjorn Rothe Knudtsen, Regional Director of Agriculture, said no further positive samples are expected as no pigs from the affected herd were supplied to any other farms.
