UK - Pig farmers can now get improved litters and give their piglets the best start in life thanks to an exciting new parent gilt from JSR.
The JSR 9T F1 parent gilt is the result of a genetic partnership between JSR and Topigs Norsvin, combining the large white Topigs Norsvin Z-line with the JSR Landrace, explained Dr Grant Walling, Director of Science and Technology at JSR, speaking to ThePigSite Editor Lucy Towers, at the 2016 Pig and Poultry Fair.
The pig is designed for indoor pig production and assures the farmer of higher numbers born alive (+0.8), increases numbers through to weaning (+0.6), less days to slaughter and less variation in birth weights, compared to their previous parent gilt.
Also beneficial to the farmer is that the pig is designed to rear the resulting larger litters thanks to a guaranteed minimum 14 teats.
Dr Walling explained that with this new pig there was a big focus on the rearing ability. "As the litters get bigger, it is important that the sow is capable of rearing them," he said.
JSR also selects for sow longevity, as it is important that farmers see their investment back. Dr Walling explained that he expects these pigs to be capable of producing six parities.
