MEXICO CITY - Secretary of the Economy, Luis Ernesto Derbez, has approved new support for poultry farmers in order to block foreign imports that do not fulfill quality norms in their countries of origin.

This safeguard will be extended to the pig farming sector because "the mirror regulation will be a clear message from this government next year."Derbez said that the government's priority was to solve the problems in agriculture and as a consequence the Secretariat of the Economy will look to establish norms on consumption and preservation of products, "because all demands should be the same in partner countries."Derbez added that the country would back the World Trade Organization (WTO) in its quest to eliminate agricultural subsidies in developed countries, but said the task would take many years.
