Farm-Scape, Episode 1641

The Canadian swine industry's 'Trade Action Reference Group' is stepping up efforts to strengthen alliances with segments of the US pork industry that are opposed to antidumping duties on imported live Canadian pigs.

A 14.06 percent preliminary antidumping duty on live Canadian pigs entering the US took effect last month. The Trade Action Reference Group is in the process of building the case that Canadian pigs imported into the US do not harm but in fact benefit the American industry.

Canadian Pork Council Executive Director Martin Rice says, now that the tariff is being collected, the American industry is starting to recognize its impact.

"We've found that since the duty has become a reality, there's many more people out there that are now seeing that this is a major impediment to their business and they are interested in seeing what they can do to voice their concerns and have some impact on the dialogue out there.

We have worked with as many US parties as we can interest to continue that alliance through the Pork Trade Action Coalition.

I think there was some impression being communicated that this would affect only the Canadian side but that's not the case at all and so there's many more US parties that have seen that the duty does have that negative impact.

They are ready to voice their concerns, contribute to the discussion and to the complaints with the US parties that launched this case.

Certainly buyers of Canadian feeder pigs are some of the most numerous parties that are complaining about this but, I think, we're finding that the processors and pork exporters in the United States are also seeing this as a negative outcome for them."

Rice says between now and April, when the US International Trade Commission issues its final injury determination, the Canadian industry will be building its defense while working to strengthen alliances with US producers who also oppose the duties.
