New pork certification program includes animal well-being

US - A new pork certification program was announced Friday at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa. The Pork Quality Assurance Plus (PQA Plus) program was developed by the Pork Industry Animal Care Coalition, and funded by the Pork Checkoff.

The Coalition, made up of pork producers, packers and processors, and restaurants and food retailers, began meeting early last year to work on finding a way to boost consumer confidence that U.S. pork is produced in a way that respects animal well-being.

The group eventually arrived at a solution that incorporates an animal well-being component, mainly the Pork Checkoff's Swine Welfare Assurance Program (SWAP), into the Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) certification program. The new program focuses on producer education and premises assessment.
