UK - As part of a drive to get more people signed up to the Pig Industry Professional Register (PIPR) new members will be given a year's free subscription to Pig World magazine. The first ten free subscriptions will be paid for by Pig World and the second ten by BPEX.

There are already 400 pig industry people signed up to the PIPR scheme, in which members collect continuous professional development points, for instance by attending technical meetings and reading Pig World.

PIPR has now been simplified into two categories, 'New entrant' and 'Member'. And training courses will now be accredited to a specific category: health and welfare, production, environment or management. So, when scheme members get their statements, it will clearly show which areas they have been keeping up to date on, which will be very useful for those who need to provide training records to inspectors.

It is now also possible to request a statement from City and Guilds at any time of year, showing the number of CPD points accumulated. Membership of PIPR demonstrates an employee's professional status in the pig industry, helping him or her progress their career.

From an employer's point of view, PIPR helps raise pig unit productivity. PIPR is a useful outward facing device for showcasing the professionalism of the pig sector and may be a mechanism in the future for reducing inspections by regulators.
