Two new gilt multiplication farms were commissioned in 2010 and capacity growth will be accelerated in 2011 with the addition of a further 3,700 GPs in 3 multiplication units. Expansion of the supply base is underpinned by a second nucleus facility that is now under construction and will be stocked by import of elite great-grandparents from PIC genetic nucleus herds in North America.

Commenting on the expansion Bongjae Lee, President of PIC Korea, said, “The Korean swine industry is still counting the cost of the devastating FMD outbreak that started at the end of 2010, and we are setting out our stall to make the maximum possible contribution to its sustainable reconstruction. The development of additional high health production capacity reflects increasing demand for PIC breeding stock. This has been achieved by a combination of the demonstrably superior performance of PIC genetics on customer farms and a revised product portfolio aligned to the requirements of the Korean market which places a high premium on meat quality. We have also added resources to enhance the availability and quality of services offered to the industry.“
