AI-Stud PIC Rehweg Repopulated Two Weeks after Evacuation
GERMANY - Due to the devastating flooding in Eastern Germany along the river Elbe three stud sites of co-operative business GFS - AI market leader in Germany - had to be evacuated.

On 9 June the site at Fischbeck was first to be evacuated, followed later by two other sites which are situated further from the river. Among these was the PIC-AI-Stud Rehweg which is operated in cooperation with GFS and houses a total 200 AI-Boars. On 25 June, after extensive cleaning and disinfection of the buildings, the first new replacement boars entered the stud at Rehweg.
Around 200 PIC-AI-Boars, including 58 GP Boars, were evacuated from the PIC-GFS-Stud Rehweg after the dike broke at Fischbeck. The evacuation was carried out under strict bio-security measures and using air-filter lorries. The boars were re-located to another GFS site at Schillsdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, or to a vacant stud of BHZP in Lower Saxony. They are now in production at these sites.
As the masses of water fortunately did not reach the stud at Rehweg the site could be cleaned and disinfected very soon in preparation for the repopulation.
While GFS focused heavily on the site preparations for the restocking, PIC Germany worked in cooperation with PICs Global Team to supply boars of high genetic merit and high health as soon as possible. Subsequently 52 boars were imported from PIC's Genetic Nucleus in Canada including 21 GP-Boars (L02 and L03) and 31 Terminal Sires (PIC408 and PIC337). Additionally 19 GP-Boars from the German Daughter Nucleus in Podelzig and 81 PIC408 boars from PIC's Boar multiplier Wulkow completed the restocking. These boars are now going through their quarantine period during which they will be prepared for their future role in supplying PIC multipliers and customers with high-quality liquid genetics.
