Mike Sheldon writes: "It is with great sadness that we are informed of the passing of Ian Smith, who has been chairman of Meadow Quality Ltd since its formation in 2002, after the merger of Meadow Valley Livestock and Quality Calves.

"Previously, Ian will have been known to many through his roles at Bibby. Ian had been ill for some time, and had been intending to step down as chairman of Meadow Quality at the forthcoming agm.

"Ian's work on behalf of the agricultural sector, and farmer-controlled groups in particular, will be sorely missed."

A memorial service for Mr Smith was held yesterday.
