Pig Abattoir Lorry-wash Facilities: Weakest Biosecurity Link

UK - Sub-standard lorry-washing facilities at abattoirs represent the British pig industry's biggest disease threat, declared one of the country's leading pig producers at a recent BPEX technical meeting.

"A massive investment is needed by the factories, otherwise these are the places that swine dysentery and PED virus are going to spread from," said the producer in response to the results of a poll of pig farmers.

"But providing good washing facilities doesn't add to their bottom line, so they won't do it unless they are made to do it."

Other producers agreed that the abattoirs should immediately start to improve their lorry washing areas, pointing out that the investment would be self-funding "as one way or another producers will have to pick up the cost".
