Brazil Sets up Pig Quarantine Facility to Protect from PEDV
BRAZIL - In order to protect the country from the spread of high-risk diseases such as Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus and the economic impacts associated with them, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) will inaugurate special facilities for the quarantine of imported pigs.

By: The event will take place next week on the premises of the Quarantine Station (EQC) in Canaanite (SP).
The goal is to ensure the safety of the Brazilian herd, especially after the outbreak of PED in countries that regularly export to live pigs for breeding to Brazil.
The quarantine service aims to retain the imported animals in a shed, where they are released after proof of sanity.
In Brazil, the EQC is the only regulated by MAPA to receive the imported animals and for the issuance of certificate property.
According to the director of the Department of Animal Health (DSA), Guilherme Marques, the realization of international trade is related to the possibility of disease transmission and, as a result, this market should be controlled by proper sanitary requirements.
PED is a viral disease that causes acute diarrhea, leading to dehydration and death of the animals. According to the Department of Agriculture (USDA), the virus is fatal only to young pigs and poses no threat to human health or food safety.
