PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 7,719

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 7,719 in 30 states, writes Jackie Linden. There were 91 new positive samples in the most recent week reported.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports 91 positive accessions out of 777 tested at 11 veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 12 July, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

The number of states reported to the NAHLN as having at least one confirmed case of PED remains at 30.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,719

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 7,719, which includes 91 for the most recent week and 160 for the month of July so far.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 25,280 farm samples have been tested, of which 27 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the current month to date, 205 farms have been tested, of which 38 samples or 19 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,575 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,681 samples or 41 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the current month to date, 169 farms have been tested, of which 28 samples or 17 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,858 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,385 samples or 32 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the current month to date, 192 farms have been tested, of which 17 samples or 8.9 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,354 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,371 samples or 24 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the current month to date, 86 farms have been tested, of which seven samples or 8.1 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 2,168 farm samples have been tested, of which 640 samples or 22 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the current month to date, 694 farms have been tested, of which 71 samples or 10 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 12,225 farm samples have been tested, of which 2,825 samples or 22 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states remains at 30.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 6 July) is 7,719, 91 more than the previous week.

Those states with 100 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 2,165; Minnesota, 1,283; Illinois, 838; North Carolina, 767; Oklahoma, 418; Indiana, 410; Ohio, 342; Kansas, 272; Missouri, 253, Michigan, 200; Nebraska, 175 and South Dakota, 114.

For the most recent week (week of 6 July), the state reporting the most new positive tests was again Iowa with 22, followed by Minnesota wiith 15.

Also reporting one or more positive results were Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 29,186

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 29,186.

For the current month to date, 9,923 samples have been tested, of which 728 samples or 7.3 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 132,797 samples have been tested, of which 20 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 6,566

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 6,566.

For the current month to date, 1,595 samples have been tested, of which 143 or 9.0 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 27,907 samples have been tested, of which 22 per cent tested positive.
