PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 7,987

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 7,987 in 30 states, writes Jackie Linden. There were 93 new positive samples in the most recent week reported.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports 93 positive accessions out of 790 tested at 11 veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 2 August, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

The number of states reported to the NAHLN as having at least one confirmed case of PED remains at 30.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,987

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 7,987, which includes 93 for the most recent week and 28 for the month of August so far.

For the month of July, 3,602 accessions were tested, of which 398 samples or 11 per cent were positive.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 27,743 farm samples have been tested, of which 25 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the current month to date, 27 farms have been tested, of which eight samples or 30 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the month of July, 524 samples were tested, of which 95 samples or 18 per cent were positive.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,919 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,754 samples or 39 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the current month to date, 24 farms have been tested, of which six samples or 25 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the month of July, 484 samples were tested, of which 61 samples or 13 per cent were positive.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,088 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,409 samples or 31 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the current month to date, 25 farms have been tested, of which two samples or 8.0 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the month of July, 549 samples were tested, of which 37 samples or 6.7 per cent were positive.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,736 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,393 samples or 23 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the current month to date, 14 farms have been tested, of which one sample or 7.1 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of July, 257 samples were tested, of which 16 samples or 6.2 per cent were positive.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 2,354 farm samples have been tested, of which 651 samples or 21 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the current month to date, 84 farms have been tested, of which 11 samples or 13 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of July, 1,971 samples were tested, of which 197 samples or 10 per cent were positive.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 13,533 farm samples have been tested, of which 2,963 samples or 21 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states remains at 30.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 27 July) is 7,987, 93 more than the previous week.

Those states with 100 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 2,212; Minnesota, 1,324 Illinois, 880; North Carolina, 787; Oklahoma, 431; Indiana, 416; Ohio, 356; Kansas, 273; Missouri, 272; Michigan, 209; Nebraska, 187 and South Dakota, 126.

For the most recent week (week of 27 July), the state reporting the most new positive tests was Illinois with 19, followed by Minnesota with 18 and Iowa with 17.

Also reporting one or more positive results were Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 30,345

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 30,345.

For the current month to date, 979 samples have been tested, of which 90 samples or 9.2 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of July, 26,203 samples were tested, of which 1,786 samples or 6.8 per cent were positive.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 157,287 samples have been tested, of which 17 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 6,819

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 6,819.

For the current month to date, 250 samples have been tested, of which 27 or 11 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of July, 3,960 samples were tested, of which 369 samples or 9.3 per cent were positive.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 30,522 samples have been tested, of which 21 per cent tested positive.
