Two New Outbreaks of African Swine Fever in Lithuania
LITHUANIA - Two new outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) have been reported on farms located in Utena which are in eastern part of the country which boarders Belarus.

By: On 10 August 2014, the owner of the backyard farm located in Ignalina district municipality, Ceikinai parish (outbreak No. three in domestic pigs) informed a private veterinarian about the suspicion of an unknown pig disease.
The temperature of one of the two pigs (four moths old), which were kept, was increased (41ºC).
Late in the evening on 11 August, blood samples from both pigs were taken and send to National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute (NFVRAI).
On 12 August, the farmer reported the death of one pig. The cadaver was delivered to NFVRAI for ASF testing. On 13 August, NFVRAI confirmed ASF using RT-PCR from blood and organ samples. T
he other pig has been stamped out and delivered to NFVRAI for ASF testing.
On 11 August, another case in Ignalina, Dukšto parish (outbreak No four in domestic pigs) in a backyard farm, which held one pig, was reported by the owner, i. e. the death of the pig without any clinical signs.
On 12 August, the cadaver was delivered to NFVRAI for ASF testing. On 13 August, NFVRAI confirmed ASF using RT-PCR from organ samples.
The source of the outbreak is still unknown.
