PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 8,263

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 8,263 in 30 states, writes Jackie Linden. There were 63 new positive samples in the most recent week reported.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports 63 positive accessions out of 731 tested at nine veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 30 August, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

The number of states reported to the NAHLN as having at least one confirmed case of PED remains 30. However, according to reports from the Utah Department of Agriculture, NVSL has recently confirmed the first case of PEDv in the state which would bring the total number of states to 31.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 8,263

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 8,263, which includes 673 for the most recent week and 308 for the month of August so far.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 30,741 farm samples have been tested, of which 24 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the current month to date, 381 farms have been tested, of which 683 samples or 18 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,274 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,814 samples or 38 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the current month to date, 414 farms have been tested, of which 55 samples or 13 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,588 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,473 samples or 29 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the current month to date, 544 farms have been tested, of which 35 samples or 6.4 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 5,258 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,426 samples or 21 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the current month to date, 212 farms have been tested, of which eight samples or 3.8 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 2,551 farm samples have been tested, of which 657 samples or 19 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the current month to date, 1,735 farms have been tested, of which 152 samples or 8.8 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 15,182 farm samples have been tested, of which 3,101 samples or 20 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states with one or more positive results, according to the official report, remains at 30.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 23 August) is 8,263, 63 more than the previous week.

Those states with 200 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 2,263; Minnesota, 1,375; Illinois, 921; North Carolina, 810; Oklahoma, 439; Indiana, 425; Ohio, 361; Missouri, 292; Kansas, 275 and Michigan, 222.

For the most recent week (week of 23 August), the state reporting the most new positive tests was Iowa with 11, followed by Minnesota with nine and Illinois with seven.

Also reporting one or more positive results were California, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 31,631

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 31,631.

For the current month to date, 20,709 samples have been tested, of which 1,398 samples or 6.8 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 177,009 samples have been tested, of which 16 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,032

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 7,032.

For the current month to date, 2,634 samples have been tested, of which 240 samples or 9.1 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 32,906 samples have been tested, of which 20 per cent tested positive.
