PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 8,316

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 8,316 in 31 states, writes Jackie Linden. There were 63 new positive samples in the most recent week reported. Utah has become the latest state to identify its first case of PEDv.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports 53 positive accessions out of 672 tested at eight veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 6 September, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

Utah was officially added as the 31st state to identify its first case of PEDv.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 8,316

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 8,316, which includes 53 for the most recent week or 7.9 per cent.

For the month of August, 3,177 accessions were tested, of which 308 samples or 9.7 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 31,472 farm samples have been tested, of which 23 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the current month to date, 88 farms have been tested, of which eight samples or 9.1 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the month of August, 380 accessions were tested, of which 68 samples or 18 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,360 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,822 samples or 37 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the current month to date, 84 farms have been tested, of which five samples or 6.0 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the month of August, 415 accessions were tested, of which 55 samples or 13 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,673 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,478 samples or 29 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the current month to date, 105 farms have been tested, of which nine samples or 8.6 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the month of August, 546 accessions were tested, of which 35 samples or 6.4 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 5,365 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,435 samples or 21 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the current month to date, 65 farms have been tested, of which none has tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of August, 212 accessions were tested, of which eight samples or 3.8 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 2,616 farm samples have been tested, of which 657 samples or 19 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the current month to date, 363 farms have been tested, of which 31 samples or 8.5 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of August, 1,748 accessions were tested, of which 152 samples or 8.7 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 15,558 farm samples have been tested, of which 3,132 samples or 19 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states with one or more positive results, according to the official report, now stands at 31.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 31 August) is 8,332; North Carolina, 812; Oklahoma, 441; Indiana, 427; Ohio, 364; Missouri, 297; Kansas, 275 and Michigan, 224.

For the most recent week (week of 31 August), the state reporting the most new positive tests was Illinois with 11, followed by Iowa and Minnesota with eight each.

Also reporting one or more positive results were Arizona, California, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 31,864

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 31,864.

For the current month to date, 4,387 samples have been tested, of which 240 samples or 5.5 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of August, 20,767 accessions were tested, of which 1,391 samples or 6.7 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 181,453 samples have been tested, of which 16 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,062

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 7,062.

For the current month to date, 470 samples have been tested, of which 34 samples or 7.2 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

For the month of August, 2,627 samples were tested, of which 236 samples or 9.0 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 33,369 samples have been tested, of which 19 per cent tested positive.
