PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 8,560

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 8,560 in 31 states, writes Jackie Linden. There were 53 new positive samples in the most recent week reported.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports 53 positive accessions out of 666 tested at eight veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 4 October, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

The total number of states reporting one or more PED-positive cases remains 31.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 8,560

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 8,560, which includes 53 for the most recent week.

For the month of September, 3,162 accessions were tested of which 259 samples or 8.2 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 492 accessions were tested, of which 36 samples or 7.3 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 34,417 farm samples have been tested, of which 22 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the month of September, 341 accessions were tested of which 44 samples or 13 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 44 farms have been tested, of which five samples or 11 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,603 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,853 samples or 36 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the month of September, 430 accessions were tested of which 33 samples or 7.7 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 92 farms have been tested, of which three samples or 3.3 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,990 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,504 samples or 27 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the month of September, 581 accessions were tested of which 35 samples or 6.0 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 86 farms have been tested, of which five samples or 5.8 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 5,805 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,459 samples or 20 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the month of September, 312 accessions were tested of which 14 samples or 4.5 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 41 farms have been tested, of which one sample or 2.4 per cent have tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 2,842 farm samples have been tested, of which 669 samples or 18 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the month of September, 1,639 accessions were tested of which 138 samples or 8.4 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 247 farms have been tested, of which 22 samples or 8.9 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 16,735 farm samples have been tested, of which 3,234 samples or 19 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states with one or more positive results, according to the official report, still stands at 31.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 21 September) is 8,560, 53 more than the previous week.

Those states with 200 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 2,328; Minnesota, 1,471; Illinois, 963; North Carolina, 833; Oklahoma, 448; Indiana, 435; Ohio, 366; Missouri, 323; Kansas, 278, Michigan, 230 and Nebraska, 203.

For the most recent week (week of 28 September), the state reporting the most new positive tests was Iowa with 13, followed by Illinois with eight.

Also reporting one or more positive results were Arizona, California, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 32,758

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 32,758.

For the month of September, 18,700 samples were tested of which 985 samples or 5.3 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 2,865 samples have been tested, of which 138 samples or 4.8 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 198,721 samples have been tested, of which 15 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,179

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 7,179.

For the month of September, 1,795 samples were tested of which 139 samples or 7.7 per cent were positive for PEDv.

For the current month to date, 311 samples have been tested, of which 12 samples or 3.9 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 35,005 samples have been tested, of which 19 per cent tested positive.
