PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 8,758

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 8,758 in 31 states, writes Jackie Linden. There were 57 new positive samples in the most recent week reported.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports 57 positive accessions out of 772 tested at 12 veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 25 October, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

The total number of states reporting one or more PED-positive cases remains 31.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 8,758

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 8,7058, which includes 57 for the most recent week.

For the current month to date, 2,721 accessions were tested, of which 233 samples or 8.6 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 36,676 farm samples have been tested, of which 21 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the current month to date, 290 farms have been tested, of which 34 samples or 12 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,901 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,893 samples or 34 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the current month to date, 411 farms have been tested, of which 30 samples or 7.3 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 5,421 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,534 samples or 26 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the current month to date, 502 farms have been tested, of which 40 samples or 8.0 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 6,337 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,502 samples or 19 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the current month to date, 193 farms have been tested, of which six samples or 3.1 per cent have tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,077 farm samples have been tested, of which 678 samples or 17 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the current month to date, 1,416 farms have been tested, of which 134 samples or 9.5 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 18,282 farm samples have been tested, of which 3,375 samples or 18 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states with one or more positive results, according to the official report, still stands at 31.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 19 October) is 8,758, 57 more than the previous week.

Those states with 200 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 2,372; Minnesota, 1,447; Illinois, 990; North Carolina, 848; Oklahoma, 453; Indiana, 443; Ohio, 370; Missouri, 340; Kansas, 283, Michigan, 235 and Nebraska, 209.

For the most recent week (week of 19 October), the state reporting the most new positive tests was Iowa with 15, followed by Minnesota with nine and six each in Illinois and North Carolina.

Also reporting one or more positive results were Arizona, California, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 33,589

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 33,589.

For the current month to date, 15,957 samples have been tested, of which 977 samples or 6.1 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 211,922 samples have been tested, of which 15 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,233

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 7,233.

For the current month to date, 1,375 samples have been tested, of which 66 samples or 4.8 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 36,118 samples have been tested, of which 18 per cent tested positive.
