PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 8,817

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 8,817 in 31 states, writes Jackie Linden. There were 65 new positive samples in the most recent week reported.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports 65 positive accessions out of 680 tested at 10 veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 25 October, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

The total number of states reporting one or more PED-positive cases remains 31.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 8,817

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 8,817, which includes 65 for the most recent week.

For the current month to date, 3,352 accessions were tested, of which 292 samples or 8.7 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 37,311 farm samples have been tested, of which 21 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the current month to date, 357 farms have been tested, of which 47 samples or 13 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,968 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,906 samples or 34 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the current month to date, 500 farms have been tested, of which 41 samples or 8.2 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 5,505 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,545 samples or 25 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the current month to date, 622 farms have been tested, of which 48 samples or 7.7 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 6,465 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,510 samples or 19 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the current month to date, 240 farms have been tested, of which seven samples or 2.9 per cent have tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,125 farm samples have been tested, of which 679 samples or 17 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the current month to date, 1,764 farms have been tested, of which 161 samples or 9.1 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 18,630 farm samples have been tested, of which 3,402 samples or 18 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states with one or more positive results, according to the official report, still stands at 31.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 26 October) is 8,817, 65 more than the previous week.

Those states with 200 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 2,385; Minnesota, 1,451; Illinois, 1,000; North Carolina, 848; Oklahoma, 456; Indiana, 447; Ohio, 372; Missouri, 343; Kansas, 292, Michigan, 235 and Nebraska, 209.

For the most recent week (week of 26 October), the state reporting the most new positive tests was Iowa with 13, followed by Illionis and Kansas, each with 10.

Also reporting one or more positive results were California, Colorado, Indiana, Minnestoa, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 33,819

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 33,819.

For the current month to date, 19,668 samples have been tested, of which 1,207 samples or 6.1 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 215,665 samples have been tested, of which 14 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,255

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 7,255.

For the current month to date, 1,747 samples have been tested, of which 88 samples or 5.0 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 36,501 samples have been tested, of which 18 per cent tested positive.
