Three New Outbreaks of African Swine Fever Confirmed in Lithuania

LITHUANIA - There has been three new outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) reported and confirmed in southern Lithuania.

In Alytus county, Varena district municipality, on 1 of November a two wild boar were hunted (a six month, female and a one year, male). The samples for African swine fever (ASF) testing were collected from the wild boar and sent to the National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute within the framework of the national ASF surveillance programme. The result of real-time PCR test performed on 4 November 2014, was found positive for ASF.

In Alytus county, Varena district municipality, Merkines parish, on 3 of November one wild boar was found dead (approximatively five years, male), testing showed that the boar had died from ASF.

The source of the outbreak is still unknown.
