With this volume, the sector achieved total revenue in the first month of the year of $73.3 million, 19.9 per cent ??lower than the performance number reached in January last year, $91.5 million.

The largest importer of Brazil pork, Russia, decreased its purchases in January by 8.3 per cent, compared to the same period last year. 10,500 tonnes were sold this year against 11,400 tonnes in 2014.

"The severe winter of Eastern Europe led to decreased shipments via the ports of Russia, which impacted on the result. In this sense, we hope that, as of February, the levels begin to return to expected standards," said the president of the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), Francisco Turra.

There was also a decrease in sales to Hong Kong by 20.2 per cent and to Angola, down 31.2 per cent.
