By comparison in 2011 the amount of pig meat entering intervention for the same period was 140,000 tonnes.

A total of 70 per cent of the contracts were for just 90 days and boneless hams made up nearly two thirds of the storage meat.

The main contributors to the private storage were Spain with 10,336 tonnes or 22 per cent.

Next came Denmark with 9,456 tonnes or 20.5 per cent of the total.

Poland had 9,137 tonnes or 15.5 per cent, Germany 6,679 tonnes or 14.5 per cent, Italy 3,630 tonnes or seven per cent, France 2,527 tonnes or 5.3 per cent and Netherlands 2,405 tonnes or 5.2 per cent.

The European Commission is reported to be considering ending the private storage shortly.
