EU Weaner Prices Starting to Taper Back
EU - The latest EU Commission data reports the EU average weaner price for the week ended 21 August as €43.23 a head. This is €10.45 higher than the same week last year and €1.11 more than at the same point in 2014.
The price trend has gone against that of 2015 and 2014, rising week-on-week between mid-May and mid-July. Indeed, the highest price of 2016 was achieved in week ended 17 July, at €44.43 a head.
In the two weeks up to 21 August 2016, there has been a slight downturn in the price, although the decline is at a much more gradual rate than in the last two years, suggesting stability in the market. At the same time, the EU pig price has started to stabilise, after three months of strong growth.
Of the leading producing countries, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark have registered increases in their weaner prices in the last three months, up by €4.90, €6.00 and €5.34 respectively.
Other Member States have recorded a more gradual rise. The one country that has gone at odds to this trend is Spain, whose price has been in decline since mid-July, and is now €6.57 less than the peak recorded in July.
Germany’s weaner price remains the highest, reaching €55.10, before tapering off slightly in the latest four weeks.
