More than 900 swine-health professionals from 20 countries expected at 2017 Leman conference
More than 900 swine veterinarians, producers and industry leaders from at least 20 countries will gather in St. Paul, Minn., Sept. 16-19, for the University of Minnesota’s annual Allen D. Leman Swine Conference — a 4-day event focused on swine health, efficiency and production.

“We strive to present a blend of the latest in swine health, disease and production information as well as the latest news on public-health issues,” program chair Montse Torremorell, DVM, PhD, associate professor at the University of Minnesota told Pig Health Today.
Main conference
The main conference opens Monday, Sept. 18, with a keynote address, “Challenges in Defining the ‘Greater Good’: An Integrated Pork Producer’s Perspective,” delivered by two Seaboard Foods executives — Gary Louis, executive vice president, and Luc Dufresne, director of health assurance.
A second keynote session, “Coopetition: Moving to a More Cooperative Swine Industry Strategy,” will be presented Tuesday by Rebecca Liu, PhD, a researcher from Lancaster University Management School, United Kingdom; Noel Williams, COO, Iowa Select Farms; Joel Nerem, DVM, Pipestone Veterinary Services, Pipestone, Minn.; and John Deen, DVM, PhD, professor, University of Minnesota.
The scientific program on Monday and Tuesday includes more than 60 breakout presentations, where veterinarians and other scientists will present their latest research and innovations.
Pre-conference
The pre-conference program beginning Saturday includes workshops in English, Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish.
To support the pork industry’s growing need for disease preparedness, Saturday’s pre-conference program will also feature a 4-hour workshop, “Geeks to Geeks: Visualization and Analysis of Swine Data.”
New this year is a session on Sunday for veterinary students. The outstanding student case presentations from the Midwest Animal Science meeting will also be given. It is open to all attendees. The conference’s poster abstract session will also be held Sunday.
Special tribute
This year’s conference will also feature a tribute to Bob Morrison, DVM, PhD, MBA, University of Minnesota, who for many years was instrumental in planning the meeting’s program. He died tragically in May following a car accident in the Czech Republic.
