Italy seizes and destroys 9.5 tonnes of Chinese pork amid ASF fears

Following Italy’s ban on Chinese pork imports due to African swine fever, tax police in the northeastern city of Batua have seized and destroyed 9.5 tonnes of Chinese pork.

According to reporting from Reuters China, tax police in Batua discovered the illegal pork hidden among imported vegetables from China. The police destroyed the pork and a Chinese national was charged with smuggling.

Chinese officials have reported that the ASF virus is present in five percent of slaughterhouse samples.
