The fifth stage of a vaccination campaign against Classic Swine Fever (PSC) in Alagoas, Brazil is well under way, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Swine Breeders (ABCS). The region has already immunised 17,011 animals. This stage of vaccination ran from October 30 until December 12, with professionals visiting the properties and vaccinating the animals.

Alagoas is the first of the 11 states in the non-free zone of the PSC that joined the pilot project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA). During the 4th stage, the state carried out the highest vaccination coverage of the campaign against PSC, with the vaccination of 138,519 animals in more than 5,000 properties, and the initial goal was 120,000 animals.

The fourth stage reached very relevant numbers in relation to the others held in Alagoas. In the first stage, in 2021, 119,000 animals were vaccinated. In the second, 127,000, and in the third, 116,000 animals. According to the report, the campaigns saw good results and brought improved security to producers.

The Secretary of State for Agriculture and Livestock (Seagri) points out that, in order for the state to achieve the status of free from Classic Swine Fever, and may reach the non-competence of the vaccine in animals, it is important for all breeders to adhere to the campaign. Immunisation, the report said, strengthens swine farming in Alagoas and ensures the health of animals. It also increases productivity and ensures that pork markets remain open.

The campaign against the Classic Swine Fever is aimed at all pig farmers in Brazil. In Alagoas, about 90% of breeders are from family farms. The vaccine is free, thanks to the investment of more than R$ 500 million made by the state government, through Seagri, and with the support of the Inter-American Institute of Cooperation for Agriculture, ABCSe the Ministry of Agriculture.
