In its most recent livestock statement, Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported that pig populations in Germany have finally stabilised. The number of pig farms, however, has further declined.

The recent downward trend on pig populations has slowed for now, likely due to the improved economic situation of pig farming overall. Germany's current  pig population is 21.2 million, down 150,600 animals or 0.7% over last year.

However, a further decline in the number of pig farmers reveals that many still have a bleak outlook on the future. This is especially true for sow producers, who continue to leave the sector. The trend is particularly worrying, as it could have a significant impact on the supply of domestic piglets in the future.

There are 16,180 pig farms in Germany, down 760 farms or 4.5% over last year.
