Indonesia poultry output grows despite weak demand
Swine and cattle account for just 4% of feed useIndonesia’s poultry sector is expanding, though farmers face pressure from weak consumer demand and falling prices, according to a USDA FAS report.
Broiler numbers are forecast to grow by 2.7% annually through 2029. In 2025, the broiler and layer populations are expected to reach 3.4 billion and 450 million head, up from 3.28 billion and 341 million in 2024. Imports of grandparent stock point to a 6.1% increase in poultry in 2025.
Despite growth, consumer purchasing power remains depressed, leading to a surplus of broiler meat. Live bird prices from April to May 2025 averaged Rp 15,000–17,000/kg, below production costs of Rp 18,000/kg. Farmers delayed sales, pushing heavier birds to market and increasing feed consumption. Poultry feed output in 2024/25 is estimated at 21.4 million metric tons (MMT), rising 3% to 23.3 MMT in 2025/26.
Poultry consumes 90% of domestic feed supplies, with aquaculture using 6% and cattle and swine 4%. Per capita poultry meat consumption is expected to rise to 13.2 kg in 2024, up from 12.6 kg in 2023.
Cattle and swine remain small feed users. Feed mills are also boosting corn inclusion, with usage projected to climb from 48% in 2024/25 to 50% in 2025/26.
