Macron says EU-Mercosur talks moving in right direction
France still cautious, seeks stronger farm and food safeguards
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that it was too early to express a firm French view on the planned EU-Mercosur trade agreement, but that steps were being taken in the right direction, Reuters reported.
France, which has been a vocal opponent of the deal, was encouraged by a proposed safeguard clause and better control on food products entering the European Union, but was waiting for the work to be finalised.
"Today, the French government, like the others, is waiting for the answers. But all of this is moving in the right direction to protect the most exposed sectors and also to protect European consumers," Macron told a news conference after an EU summit in Brussels.
