Gains in Cuba, islands offset softer Dominican Republic
Pork exports to the Caribbean rose 2% in the first three quarters of the year, led by a doubling of shipments to Cuba and higher volumes to the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Bermuda, Jamaica and the French West Indies, according to a recent market report compiled by the US Meat Export Federation.
Total exports to the region reached 92,457 metric tonnes, while export value increased 6% to $284 million, the federation reported.
Demand remained strong in the Dominican Republic, the region’s largest destination for US pork, though exports were modestly lower. Shipments to the country totalled 66,313 metric tonnes, down 5% from a year earlier, while export value slipped 2% to $195.9 million.
