Dr. Megan Bollin, swine technical services veterinarian with Norbrook, recently spoke to The Pig Site’s Sarah Mikesell at the 2023 World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

“The newest thing in our portfolio is Tulieve, which is our generic tulathromycin or generic Draxxin that most producers will be familiar with,” said Bollin. “The unique thing about this new drug is that it comes in a plastic bottle and that is exclusive to our product.”

There are several other generics on the market, but Norbrook’s new product is the only one that comes in a plastic bottle. Bollin said that's important because when using it in the barn, it's more user-friendly. If a worker drops it, it's not going to break, so the producer is reducing their risk of product loss, saving money and reducing the risk of worker injuries.

“Lots of benefits, but still the same trusted tulathromycin labeled for swine respiratory disease,” she said.

Solution for swine respiratory disease

“Swine respiratory disease is something producers and veterinarians have battled for decades, literally,” she explained. “Whether it's a combination of viruses and bacteria, PRRS virus or influenza virus, there's lots of them out there. This is going to help control a lot of the secondary infections that bacteria cause when they come in and take up shop.”

Tulieve is labeled for treatment and control of six different pathogens that affect swine. It's a single shot, so it’s only administered once and it's a low volume dose. It's rapidly absorbed and has a long duration of effect. It also has a swine withdrawal time of only five days.

“It's got a lot of benefits, and then the plastic bottle feature is just one more benefit that we can add to that checklist,” said Bollin.
