Farmers Urged to Understand Motivation of Animals Rights Groups

CANADA - The Center for Consumer Freedom suggests those involved in animal agriculture need to understand the motivations of organizations like the Humane Society of the United States and help ensure the public is also informed, writes Bruce Cochrane.

The executive director of the Center for Consumer Freedom suggests those involved in animal agriculture need to understand the motivations of organizations like the Humane Society of the United States and to play a role in ensuring the general public is also informed.

"Understanding the Humane Society of the United States Anti-Farming Agenda" will be discussed as part of the 2013 Banff Pork Seminar, which kicks off tomorrow.

Rick Berman, the president of Berman and Associates and the executive director of the Centre for Consumer Freedom, says pork producers need know the long term objective of organizations like the Humane Society of the United States is to promote a vegan lifestyle and put those who raise animals for food out of business.

These groups basically don't want people to raise animals for food.

They don't want to have animals used for medical experimentation for drugs that may be life saving for people.

They believe that we should experiment on human beings instead.

These are people who do not believe that eating any animal protein, if it leads to what they consider to be enslavement or suffering of an animal, should be allowed.

It's a fairly radical agenda although they don't present it that way to the public.

They would suggest to the public that they are just trying to institute more humane handling practices for chickens or cows or pregnant sows but, at the end of the day when you look at all of their demands, they all involve raising the cost of production which in turn would raise the price of the product which is designed to then dissuade people from ordering that product as often.


Mr Berman says anyone who enjoys a hamburger, a pork loin, or an omelet should understand there's a group that they may even be funding that's designed to take those items off the dinner table and, if the public is not fully informed, the logical consequences are that the cost of production goes up and more famers are put out of business.
