Ceva’s recently ran a trial on one of Denmark’s best managed farms in the country with 1,200 sows.

During the trial, 93 per cent of sows and gilts were mated and 94.5 per cent of those animals mated within three days.

This increased concentration of mating had a very significant impact on production. The number of weaned pigs per week increased from 716 to 753 and two additional lactation days were recorded as the capacity in farrowing sections was better used.

This new way of managing where gilts are mated at 240 days instead of 259 also resulted in the average intake of feed units (FU) per gilt per year being reduced by 50 FU.

High productivity is the key to feeding a growing population and to do this in a sustainable way. Scientists have calculated that a 0.1 per cent improvement in the feed conversion results in seven per cent lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making this work with Altresyn important not only for the profitability of Danish producers but also for the benefit of our environment.
