Research Key to Improving Canadian Pork Industry Competitiveness

CANADA - The chair of Swine Innovation Porc says a coordinated national approach to research is key to ensuring the Canadian pork industry is competitive in an international setting, writes Bruce Cochrane.

Representatives of Swine Innovation Porc will be on hand next week as part of the 2015 Banff Pork Seminar to meet with pork industry stakeholders and update them on what has been happening in the area swine industry research over the past year.

Stewart Cressman, the chair of Swine Innovation Porc, says the organisation's goal is to provide research and development leadership in coordinating research, knowledge transfer, and commercialisation of the research to improve the competitiveness of the Canadian swine industry.

Three primary themes that we're looking at is reducing production and feed input costs.

This is likely a large project involving a number of sub projects.

It constitutes about a third of our budget, maybe even a little more.

Another one is increasing product attributes and prices, and the third one is more on, looking forward, enhancing adaptability and sustainability of the swine sector, looking at things we can do in terms of strategic plans to ensure that we're continually improving and ensuring the sustainability of the swine sector.

The programme includes 15 larger research projects with a number of subprojects inside these 15 research projects, 27 lead researchers with other collaborators with those lead researchers and 13 universities and research centres so it is definitely a collaborative approach across the country happening at university institutions as well as Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research centres.

Mr Cressman says it comes down to ensuring the Canadian pork industry is competitive in an international setting.
