China has to feed 1.4 billion people a fifth of the world’s population. The animal production industry in China has come a long way from small and labour intensive farms to large and highly automated with the latest in technology and innovation at their disposal.

However the current scenario in China is challenging with African Swine Fever (ASF) effecting the largest pork producing country in the world with an expected unprecedented decline of 25 percent to 35 percent in production in 2019. It is expected that in 2019, Chinese soymeal usage and feed corn usage will drop by 4 percent and 8 percent due the effects of ASF.

The US and China trade war has also had a significant impact on the feed industry, as prices for staple feed imports, predominantly from the US, such as soybeans, sorghum, and other specific feed ingredients such as whey protein are now subject to new tariffs of 25 percent. The Chinese government has also set mandates in motion with regards feed component strategy, which for example, aim to eliminate antibiotic usage in feed by 2020.

Comprehending the nature and the effects of these challenges and changes in the production environment of the feed industry in China is paramount for companies, in order for them to uncover the opportunities arising as a result of these transformations.
