Optimising swine manure as a nutrient source
Swine manure offers an economical alternative to commercial fertiliserNational Pork Board offers free On-Farm Sustainability Reports that can help farmers recognise key sustainability metrics on their operation. Doing so will allow them to make more informed decisions.
The report includes information such as manure data with application and agronomic rates, water data on both quality and amount used, and community outreach including donations and service hours. Some US pork producers have used the report to refine their on-farm nutrient management plans.
In a special report on using manure as a nutrient source, Marguerite Tan, director of environmental programs for National Pork Board, said now is a good time to consider other options if it is hard to find commercial fertilizer due to supply chain disruptions.
“We encourage producers to review their existing manure management plans to compare the cost of commercial fertiliser to the hauling time and fuel costs of applying manure on more acres,” she said.
The On-Farm Sustainability Reports don't just help confirm management decisions for producers. They also provide proof of the industry's commitment to improve sustainability.
"Building consumer trust will help protect pig farmers’ freedom to operate and contribute to the industry’s long-term economic viability," said the National Pork Board special report.
