Last week we attended the 29th National Hog Convention and Trade Exhibition in Manila, Philippines (see headline image). Genesus Philippines produced an excellent booth with a focus on meat quality produced at a competitive cost of production, Genesus Pork was cooked in many ways and served every day and the taste and tenderness were commented on by most people.

Breeding stock orders were taken and lots of potential orders were discussed.

On the 2nd day, Dr. Bob Kemp gave a seminar titled The Importance of Swine Genetics to a packed seminar room. There was a lot of interest in the presentation, and this was proven by so many questions.

The Philippines is enjoying profitable pig production and the restocking and expansion post-ASF is well underway.

Thailand

This week we are in Bangkok, Thailand.

Massive smuggled pork seized in Thailand

Despite over 4000 tonnes of smuggled frozen pork being seized in Thailand recently, it is unlikely to slow down an oversupply supply of pork in the country.

Authorities recently seized over 160 containers full of frozen pork originating from Brazil, Europe and Russia at a deep seaport in eastern Thailand. Even so, it is estimated to be a small part of those smuggled into the country.

The price of live pigs in Thailand keeps on plunging and reached THB 70/kg (USD 2) in April, down 40% year-on-year.

Similarly, the price of weaned piglets halved to THB 1500 or around USD 42 and is likely to decline further.

The falling price indicates that the amount of smuggled pork intercepted by the authorities is far below what was taken into the country illegally.

Vietnam

Our next stop is Ho Chi Minh City in the South of Vietnam.

The price of the liveweight pig now is 51,000 – 54,000 vnd/kg in the North; 52,000 – 53,000 vnd/kg in the center; and 52,000 – 53,000 vnd/kg in the South. The average will be around 52,500vnd/kg.
