Basic requirements for intensive pig housing

By Ken Casey, DPI Toowoomba , revised by M J Moore, Pig & Poultry Production Institute - Profitable pig production depends largely on the design and provision of suitable housing.

Pigs need warmth, a dry bed and protection from winter draughts and summer heat. They have certain minimum requirements for space, fresh air, hygienic conditions and access to feed and water, and accommodation should not predispose to illness or injury.

Operators deserve a congenial work situation in which to look after pigs effectively and carry out other chores with a minimum of labour.
