In the late 1980's and early 1990's pig production throughout the world started to experience a change in disease patterns that has had a profound impact on the way we have kept pigs ever since. Before that time most diseases were bacterial or mycoplasmal. Viral disease occurred either as discrete outbreaks or as emergency diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease or Classical Swine Fever.
