Dr. Megan Bible, a nutritionist with Hamlet Protein, recently spoke to The Pig Site’s Sarah Mikesell at the 2025 World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

Hamlet Protein has a new product launch in the US. Tell us about HP 270 and what it does.

HP 270 is remarkably like our HP 300. There are some differences though. One of the differences is its lower in crude protein – it's about 51% crude protein. It’s also higher in anti-nutritional factors where HP 300 would be lower. It's still within our recommendations and what we would recommend.

The reason for the difference is that HP 270 goes through our process a little bit quicker, so it doesn't have time to break down like the HP 300 does. You can use it just like you can with HP 300. We created HP 270 because it's a more economical product from Hamlet Protein, but it still has all the pluses of being a consistent crude protein and some other aspects as well.

What does the data show for HP 270?

Two years ago, we talked about protein kinetics. What we've found out with protein kinetics is that HP 270 is a fast protein just like HP 300. It's not as fast, but it is faster than all the other soy products that are out there. We have also learned from some research conducted that it performs better than other soy products in nursery diets.

Remind us, what is a fast protein?

When we talk about protein kinetics, you have fast versus slow protein. Your fast protein is going to be your protein that is coming into the bloodstream very quickly, and it's coming in early. Basically, what you're doing is you are feeding more synthetic amino acids. We are synchronizing our synthetic amino acids with our dietary whole proteins, which is what Hamlet Protein is. This will allow the animal to be able to use more of those amino acids for performance to improve performance.

Before we even started talking about protein kinetics, we knew that we had an improvement in nitrogen retention. HP 300 and HP 270 have approximately 5% improvement in nitrogen retention. We know the animals are growing and they're using that nitrogen and those amino acids from the protein because we've already done the research. It's impressive.

Bottom line, what does a product like this mean for producers?

The bottom line is if a producer is looking for a very consistent protein product but needs something that's a little bit lower from a cost perspective, see us. We'll tell you all you need to know about HP 270 because that's where it's going to fit. Also, if you want to look at it in sows, we have some positive research in sows to share with you as well.
