Dr. Paige Gott, PhD, Mycotoxin Manager with DSM, spoke to The Pig Site’s Sarah Mikesell at the 2022 World Pork Expo held in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. Gott shared a statement released by DSM regarding approval of a mycotoxin-degrading ingredient for the swine industry.

“We’re very excited to share that yesterday DSM received a letter from FDA CVM confirming that they have completed their regulatory review and found that the data supports the safety and functionality of DSM’s enzyme fumonisin esterase for the degradation of fumonisins present in swine feed. This is the first mycotoxin degrading ingredient to go through FDA food additive partition process and will be the first product ever to be approved for degrading fumonisins in swine feed in the US market,” she said.

Gott continued to describe the significance of this announcement for producers and the US swine industry.

“We know that fumonisins are very frequently occurring in corn and other corn-based ingredients. So, they're a common challenge present on farms, especially swine, because swine are very susceptible to this category of mycotoxins. So, this product will give a new option that we didn't know that has safety and efficacy backing to it to address this challenge,” Gott said. “It's the first product of its kind to be approved for use in the US, so that's great for the industry,” she concluded.
